This is not the latest kernel source for Assabet. (2.4.0-test8-rmk4-np2
is, at the moment, although due to a potential bug in the UDA1341 support
on that board, it may not be for long. =)

If you obtained this from my site, please consider upgrading to
ramdisk_ks.gz at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~wearable/software/ramdisk.html.
Since you used Nicolas' assabet_config when building your kernel, you
already have the pcnet_cs driver as a static component of your kernel
image. Although it would be more in the spirit of Card Services to use the
modular client drivers, there is a convenience advantage to just using the
static versions. As such, the new ramdisk does not include /lib/modules.

This has been on the bug list for as long as people have been using
network interfaces on Assabet. Unfortunately, every time someone mentions
it, we all sort of look at each other, ask, "why would you want to ping
the loopback interface?", and then go back to what we were doing. =(
If someone were to approach this problem, it would probably help to have
some reference examples of what does and does not work on that board. If
you don't configure the pcnet_cs driver, but only ifconfig loopback, can
you ping localhost? If you try the SMC91C96 on Neponset, and ifconfig
loopback, can you ping localhost? How about another PCMCIA network
interface?
Good luck,
