I know of two smaller alternatives to glibc:
http://www.fefe.de/dietlibc/ which has to be linked statically
with your programs (but as it turns out, your program+dietlibc will
be much smaller than a dynamically linked program+glibc)
and the more common uCLibc:
http://cvs.uclinux.org/uClibc/
This one can be shared and you might get more support (it's used
with uClinux so I guess there must be mailing lists). I decline
responsability if any of those statements is wrong!
