This is pretty much the classic `broken kernel' symptom so there are no easy
answers.
Have you successfully built kernels in the past? If so, which version was the
last one that worked?
What compiler and binutils are you using, do you have CONFIG_TEXT_SECTIONS
set, and are you remembering to use the Image file (not vmlinux or zImage) as
the kernel that you boot?
