When the monitor goes to suspend mode after some time it can also mean
that it's unable to sync the current mode. Try to have a look at the
framebuffer driver you use and try changing the initial screen mode
parameters.
But if there's no disk activity after the screen gets blank, this won't
help, I'm afraid.
