right. This allows the system to boot, but I can't log in at the console or
through telnet. rlogin works okay, so I'm in a position to start fixing.

I did start doing that, but I gave up when I realised I didn't really know
why I was doing it, or what half the packages are ... :/

It is almost, provided I log in remotely and start X.
I started compiling a 2.2 kernel, but have come up against egcs crashing with
'fatal signal 11'. The x86 FAQs say this is usually a sign of a hardware
fault. Is it the rev K problem?
