Install problems:

I have 2 systems - neither of which I appear to be able to install
ARMlinux on successfully.

System 1:
ROS 4.00, 66Mb (32+32+2), ARM 710
Drives: motherboard IDE: 1.2Gb ADFS (F+), ATAPI 4xCDROMchanger
        Powertec SCSI: dev 4:1Gb conner CFP1060S SCSI-2 (powertec F)
dev 5:100Mb ZIP (disconnected - see below)
                       dev 6:116Mb CONNER CP30100 SCSI-1 (powertec
partitioning: 4Mb RISCOS, 98Mb Linux, 14Mb swap

On this system I have tried installation over NFS and from CDROM with the
same results. I am using an ftp site snapshot of 1999.11.07.

Botting from the floppy is fine and the install goes much as expected
until the powertec driver is loaded. If the ZIP drive is pluged in it
gets stuck in a loop going round and round. I can't find the bit of paper
I wrote the diagnostic details for that one on now, but once I get a
working system I can fiddle with the powertec driver to work out what the
problem is....unplugging the drive means things proceed as expected.

So, ignoring that glitch we continue and I get to the package selection
section (stage 6 IIRC). First I get an error 'unable to read header at
604440'. Not sure what that refers to. Then it comes up '29 out of 459
package refernces were not found in RedHat/RPMS dir, but were specified
in RedHat/base/comps file. These will be ignored.' OK. I can then select
packages as desired. Next I get 'unresolved dependencies'
bash (unknown package):fileutils
kernelcfg (unknown package):python
kernelcfg (unknown package):pythonlib
newt (unknown package):slang
zsh (unknown package):fileutils

I understand from previous correspondence that this isn't serious,
however, at this point - whether I select 'no' or 'yes' to 'do you want
to install these, then after the 'everything will be loged to logfile'
message it goes back to the select packages to install window, and I am
stuck going round and round in a loop, never being able to install any
packages.

Anyone got any idea why? Sometimes I see errors in one of the virtual
terminals about 'scsi.h:incomplete transfer detected....' which makes me
suspicious. Is the powertec driver not happy and is this preventing the
installer from installing? Have people sucessfully used this driver or
shouod I assume it's broken?

Having got to this stage I could do a manual installation of some basic
RPMs except that I can't find the rpm program anywhere in the initial
filesystem. Is it there? if not how does the installer manage to install
anything? I see that 'rpm...' is one of the rpms :-)

System 2:
ROS 3.71, 17Mb (16+1), ARM 700 +FPA 10
Drives: motherboard IDE: 4Gb WD caviar 34000

On this system I cannot boot from a floppy with
!linux -bootkernel ADFS::0

It recognises the boot options OK, so I select 2:Linux then it loads the
kernel but just hangs at the point where it should say 'uncompressing
linux'. I tried the RPC kernel discs from 1999.10.22 and 1999.04.08, both
of which work fine on system 1.

I thought the unusual CPU might be a problem (is this supported?), so put
in the ARM 710 from system 1 - exactly the same. I can't try it with a
Strongarm as neither system will work reliably with one.

So then I thought - right, I'll put this HD in System 1 and get stuff
installed that way. I still get exactly the same symptom! Now this
suggests that it is something about having that particular HD with the
!linux app on it. The !linux app is identical to the copy on system 2 - I
copied it again to make sure. It didn't help. This seems heavily wierd.

What might be the problem? How can I get some diagnostics to track down
the problem?

At the moment I can't fix anything as I can't get a working system to
start with....mutter.
