OK, answering my own mails: It turned out to be a corrupt hdlist file, so
you can ignore this prob now (although the 'won't boot a kernel' problem
with my other system remains).

Next I get as far as all tha packages installing, time, mouse, keyboard
config, then

new stage 9
kernel 2.0.36 installed
loading module /.etc/loop.o
bin/insmod 'insmod' '/etc/loop.o'

 At this point the main window says 'bin/insmod returned error 2'
 
Fiddling at the prompt the problem seems to be that there isn't an
'/etc/loop.o'. The only one I can find is in
/mnt/lib/modules/2.0.36/block/

Is this something missing from the initial ramdisc or is the installer
confused?
