I guess that is owing to the new volume calculation in the latest
awedrv ver.0.4.3 which is included in 2.2.0 kernel.
The new method is compatible with ADPI, so that it seems similar to
DOS or Windows tones (as far as I've listened). The old type
calculation can be used by switching the mode via aweset or drvmidi
program. For example,
% aweset newvolume off
