Swap space is just a way of effectively extending the size of your memory. If
you have 256M of real memory, and if that's enough for your needs, then you
don't need swap space. If you need more memory, then you can either add more
real memory, or you can add swap space. If the extra memory is real then it'll
be faster but more expensive, and if it's swap then it'll be slower but
cheaper. You may also well have hardware constraints which prevent you from
adding real memory beyond a certain amount, in which case you would have to
extend your memory size with swap space.
