DNS question!

Dear all,
     This question may not be asked here, but I can not find a list
to ask.

     I have a SGI O2 install IRIX 6.5, I setup a DNS server,
when I use "nslookup" in local machine, I can find any computer,
but "ping", "telnet", "netscape" can all not resolve any computer name.
Why, why,....?
