I think I may have misunderstood your problem when I wrote my earlier response.
I have reread it, and I now believe that you are saying that NSLOOKUP does
work, but that other host lookups do not work. This would imply that
"/etc/resolv.conf" is set up correctly, but that "/etc/nsswitch.conf" is not.
Check the "hosts:" record of your "/etc/nsswitch.conf" file. It should list
"dns" as a place to check for host name resolution. Mine, for example, looks
like this:

    hosts:      files nis dns

On my system, therefore, "/etc/hosts" is checked first, NIS (YP) is checked
second, and DNS is checked last.
