cat /proc/sound
cat /proc/interrupts
cat /proc/dma
cat /proc/ioports

Are you loading sound as a module?
Do you have the AWE32 synth compiled in as a (modularised) low level driver?
Which kernel version are you using?
Do you have a modules.conf or conf.modules with 'options sound traceinit=1' in it?
Do you get error messages when you try loading the module?

Your netscape address book is created by netscape if it doesn't already
exist. As long as you don't do anything stupid like deleting the contents
of your home directory, you're fine.
Your XF86Config file, on the other hand is probably in a strange place.
Make a copy of it to somewhere safe, then after upgrading copy it to /etc

You'd probably be better off with RedHat or Debian. OTOH, if you like
Slackware, stick with it :-)
