After a lot of experimentation and a few good hits from some people around
here, I found a solution to this problem (not, unfortunately, as a result
of this post), and I thought that others might like to know how to do it.

Edit the "acroread" wrapper script (/usr/Acrobat3/bin/acroread, or
whatever), and add this line near the top:

export -n LD_PRELOAD

Simple, and it allows Acrobat reader to run from within netscape 4.06.

However, I have no idea how to get the plugin to work :-(

(I haven't tried modifying the netscape wrapper scripts to remove the
LD_PRELOAD variable).
