Don't know if this can resolve ALL of your serial probs, but try
replacing /dev/cuax with /dev/ttySx wherever you can. When I rolled on
Slackware 3.1, cua1 still worked, but now (Debian 2.0) I can't use it
any more. It's become an obsolete device name (not only for Debian ;-) )
