You set the default resolution in XF86Config. The default is the first
one lists in the Display - Modes line for the "Depth" you want.
'startx -bpp 16' will give you 16bit mode from the console.
Otherwise, edit the file 'Xservers' (mine is in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers),
to set 16bit as the default. Edit the line like:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 16
