I do it by the following very primitive steps.
0. Load up X windows locally (on the homebox) and get ppp internet
connection.
1. Find out the IP address that homebox is using (via
ifconfig command or the ezppp debug window).
2. Remote login to workbox
3. Then on the (remote) workbox type
export DISPLAY=<IP address of homebox>:0.0
usually something like
export DISPLAY=198.110.160.202:0.0
4. Check on the local homebox with
xhost
command to make sure that homebox can display X applications from
workbox. (It should have an entry like INET:workbox.)
5. Then I could type netscape on workbox remotely to get
netscape to display on my (local) homebox. (It takes too long to load
through my 28.8 modem. Something smaller like xfm or xdvi is OK.)
I use only plain telnet or rlogin to do it, nothing fancy as you do,
and I don't know how to do it your way. Hope this helps at the lower
level ideas (the two critical components that make it work) unless I
totally misunderstood your question, in which case I apologize for
my ignorance.
Good luck!
