You can install the base system of Debian Linux with about 8 diskettes,
it's easy! Or, you can install compatible NICs in your 486 machines and
install from another linux/unix machine across the network, using NFS,
which is, also, quite good, and fast, if on the same physical network
segment.

Any method using a networked setup is the way to go. You can also
install via FTP :)
