Well, I would suggest recompiling the kernel to include SCSI tape support.
I have not used this actual model, but I have had no problems running
backups with my HP Surestore 12/24 with the DDS-3 6 tape Autoloader. To
control the tape drive you will need to become familiar with the mt command
(check out man mt). The SCSI tape devices are /dev/stx and /dev/nstx,
where x is some number, probably 0. /dev/stx rewinds the tape after a
write whereas /dev/nstx does not. As for backups there are many things you
can do. You can purchase commercial programs or try open source projects
such as amanda (I can't remember the URL). I simply use some shell scripts
with the tar and dd commands to do my backups. With just these two
programs and some shell programming I am able to do full and incremental
backups. Let me know if you would like to see examples.

BTW: If you ever get an autoloader and need to control it try mtx by
Leonard Zubkoff, et. al. I can't remember where I got the source, but if
you check redhat.com or linux.org you can probably find a link. I can also
send it to you if you would like. It is very nice to work with and can
allow for much larger backups via the --new-volume-script option in tar.

Good Luck.
