An IP address is assigned to each your network device and not to each machine.
And every machine has at least a device called loopback device whose IP
address is 127.0.0.1. So you cannot give this address to other machines.
When you connect your machine to an ISP, you will be given an IP address, and
it will be assigned to the device called ppp0. If you want your machine to
be a server, your machine must have an IP address for each of your device
(maybe ppp1, ppp2, ppp3....and so on).
You can get the list of devices using "ifconfig -a".
