A few days ago I asked how to configure the monitor power saving settings in
both X and text mode. Here's what I finally did.
In X: Someone (I'm sorry but I can't remember his name) pointed me to the "xset
dpms" command. I added the command "xset dpms 300 1800 3600" to
"/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0". The numbers are in seconds from the last interactive
activity. This command causes the monitor to enter standby mode after 5
minutes, suspend mode after 30 minutes, and off mode after an hour. For the
acronymically challenged, I found out that DPMS stands for "display power
management signaling". I chose "/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0", as that causes the
settings to be reestablished each time the login display is presented.
In text mode: I added the following commands to "/etc/rc.d/rc.local":
setterm -powersave hsync
setterm -blank 5
setterm -powerdown 55
This causes the monitor to enter the mode specified by -powersave after 5
minutes of interactive inactivity, and to enter powerdown (off) mode after an
additional 55 minutes (1 hour total) of interactive inactivity. The powersave
setting can be "hsync" for standby mode, "vsync" for suspend mode, or
"powerdown" to go straight to off mode.
