serial console problem

Hello, Since we do not have access to monitor/keyboard for our colocated Linux servers, I'm trying to implement serial-console so we can use a laptop to connect to ttyS1 via a serial port.  I've basically done the following so far: 1) modified lilo.conf (added support for serial) 2) ran lilo 3) mknod console device Everything seems to work fine (I can see the boot messages through HyperTerminal on my laptop) except for one thing:  I can't type in the bootprompt arguments.  One thing we need to do is go into single user mode (ie. type in "linux 1") from serial-console.  What am I missing?
