Are you sure it's not Gnome that won't exit, and not the fact you can't log
out from a command line ?
If it's Gnome by itself, then there maybe a setting that's missing. If you can't
use the "logout" command from a command line, then I would say there's a
greater problem.
Unfortunately, I don't have RH 6 or Gnome that I use, so I can't really offer
any answers or suggestions.
