The responses I received made it clear that it was a Linux (not BIOS) issue.
I actually found a discussion of this at redhat.com under their "gotchas." I
remotely updated the modutils package, created a foo file, and remotely
printed with lpr foo (isn't Linux cool?). At least, I _think_ I printed--I
didn't receive an error message and I'm not there to get the printout.

        May be you have to instal the parport_pc module, first you have to
know the iobase and the irq of your lpt port (see it in setup), after
that, try

        modprobe parport_pc.o io=your-iobase irq=your-irq

and

        modprobe lp.o parport0


This work to me.....
