If you use your original redhat 6.1 disks and do an "upgrade" install you
can pick up things missed in the original install(and options not selected
before).  this is the only safe use of upgrade that I've found.

You probably didn't select the "I intend to use this system for development"
(or whatever it's called) option when installing the system. You'll need to
download and install a number of RPMs in order to reliably make things. You
might start with: "make", "egcs", "binutils", "bison", "flex", "byacc".
