To mount / read-only try
umount -r /
Then use dd (or cp -dpR ) to move the entire contents of / to the new /
which is mounted somewhere else, edit your fstab and reboot. I think you
should be able to pull off the mount swap without rebooting, but I'm not
exactly sure how to go about doing it.
