well I am not an expert on the subject but I did manage to shift my /home directory to
another partition successfully and I think it should work for your /root as well.

Here goes.....
First of all find some empty space on your disk (other than the partition where you
want to transfer) and make a dir "backup" and copy all your files from /root to this
folder. Now add an entry in /etc/fstab like this :
"/dev/hdb2 /root ext2 auto,rw etc etc etc......"
now delete the directory /root and make a new dir like this:
"rm -rf /root " & "mkdir /root"
and manually mount it - "mount /root". Now copy all your files back from "backup"
folder to /root. Thats it!
Because of entry in the /etc/fstab the root partion will be automatically mounted at
the boot up.
This is just a general outline and you may need to make slight variations depending
upon your actual configuration and any comments from the list are welcome to point a
more easier way.
