i would like to be able to export a directory on
my workstation at work, so that i can mount it
from my workstation at home (thus enabling me to
have the same environment at home & at work, without
having to copy files).

in considering NFS to do this, i'm wary of connection
speed (i have a 1mbs dsl line connection on each
machine) and network lag time making it unfeasible,
and security (i've never used NFS outside of a local
area network situation, or where i was within a firewall).

are there other, workable alternatives that i can
consider? would samba be an option? network lag time
and connection speed notwithstanding, is there a
perforamnce hit with nfs in such a scenario?

i'm using kernel 2.2.16 and redhat 6.2 on both machines.

thanks in advance

p.s. i'm open to other suggestions as well.
