I use a caching name server on my setup.  Works very well, and is not
all that difficult to implement.  Took abut 15 minutes to create the
configuration files.  Mine is authoritive for my local subnet, caches 
everything else.

I've set all my other systems to use the linux host as their DNS server,
and that has eliminated all dialouts for local access.

I have occasional problems with connects due to my laptop trying to
connect to systems it knows at work.  Some form of filter rules based
on the netbios protocol should fix that.  I never need to send netbios 
through the gateway, so a complete block should be OK.
