This is a VFAQ. (Is someone maintaining the FAQ? Where is it?)
less /usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/ip_dynaddr.txt
echo 5 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr
Place the latter command in one of your /etc/rc files (rc.local I guess).
I use it even though DNS is mostly the first thing that is done on my
machine. It allows me to refer to other machines by their IP numbers as
well as their names, and makes it safer for me to use named.
