Hmm... Connect script fails right away. My first guess is path problems.
Make sure you have a full path to the chat program wherever it is specified.
You said you started it from the command line. As root? It might be
a permission problem on /dev/modem or whatever.
Next step would to add the -v parameter to chat to get it to log into
/var/log/messages.
Next step is to break out strace and see what is *really* going on.
Hang in there. It does work. And when it works, it usually works forever.
