Please forgive me if this is a silly question, but how do I build
Ethertap support into the kernel?

I am using Kernel 2.2.1 on an i586. Ethertap is _not_ given as an
option anywhere in either 'make menuconfig' or make config', nor is it
listed as either included or not defined in
/usr/src/linux/.config. Grepping the kernel source tree shows it
mentioned in the net drivers (especially the ethertap code), and in
the ppc architecture dependant part of the tree, but not for any other
architectures.

So, should I ignore the warnings at the top of the file and manually
edit .config to add a definition for CONFIG_ETHERTAP, or is should I
use some other method to build it into the kernel (or as a module)?
