I installed diald-0.16-5 on my redhat 5.1 system via rpm. I took the default
diald.conf file for dynamic ppp. (It has the dynamic line and defaultroutes as well as
a random local and remote IP address, and mode ppp). The connect line reads
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f -v /etc/chat-ppp0"
This is the same chat script I use with ifup ppp0, which works fine. Now when I run
diald (diald or diald on) it dials my ISP when there is activity and soon after dialds
again, and again, and again. My /var/log/messages reveals that it connects sends the
login stuff and gets the message
ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS3
HANGUP (SIGHUP)
MODEM HUNGUP
It then waits 30 seconds for the modem to reset and dials again. What's up??
I notice that when I connect with ifup ppp0, /var/log/messages shows my ip address and
the remote ip address from my connections right after the ppp <--> /dev/ttyS3, but
when I dial with dial I don't get this message, only the hangup. I suspect there is
something wrong with the ip numbers or setting them; however I thought that local and
remote didn't matter as long as something was there because the dynamic meant that is
would change the numbers as needed after connecting.
