I had the same problem with diald.  It seems that Diald likes useing
the ttyS device instead of the cua device.  Instead of using
/dev/modem use /dev/ttySx, where "x" is the device number.  If your
modem is on DOS COM2, then /dev/modem probably points to /dev/cua1 and
you should use /dev/ttyS1.
