The diald RPM from the redhat site (both srpm and binaryrpm) is broken.

I installed diald as follows:
1. download the vanilla source of diald 0.16 from the diald home page:
http://www.dna.lth.se/~erics/diald.html
2. Get the 0.16.5 patch from the same source and apply it as stated.
3. Build diald from the source.
4. Install the (broken) diald-0.16.5-201.i386.rpm with rpm.
5. copy the newly compiled "diald" program from step 3 to /usr/sbin to replace the one
put there by the diald RPM.
6. download the diald-config-1.2.1-noarch.rpm and
diald-config-metered-1.2.1-noarch.rpm RPMS from the redhat contrib directory and
install them. (the diald-config-1.2.1 RPM mau need a --force option to replace the
/etc/rc.d/init.d/diald file)

Provided your PPP link is set up correctly from the control-panle, all should now work
hunky dory
