I don't know whether this helps, but when I installed the diald rpm, 
diald would dial a few times, then lock up. I experienced similar 
problems to you like not being able to log in or even reboot. When I 
looked, I noticed that diald had added a line to /etc/syslog.conf:

local2.*                                               |/etc/diald/chat.fifo

Basically, this pipes all of diald's syslog output back into it's 
command pipe!

Changing this to:

local2.*                                                                        
/var/log/local2

solved the problems I was having.
