> what is a null modem?
>
A null modem is a cable that allows connection between
two computers without a modem. I.E. since each computer wants
to transmit on the TX line and recieve on the RX line, the
null modem cable needs to connect the TX line of one computer to
the RX line of the other computer, and vice-versa.

They also usually loop-back the handshake lines (the lines
that the computer and modem would use to indicate status)
so that everything works.

They often come as little moulded plastic blobs with a
db-25 on each end. You can buy these at Radio Shack or
your favorite computer store.

A few minutes at altavista.digital.com will undoubetedly
provide more information.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of RS-252.
