Did you ever find a solution to this?
I'm getting this same error, once every few minutes.
I've been using diald for a few years... I just upgraded to SuSE 5.3,
but I use my old configuration files.
It seems to restart PPP at this point... rather than everything dying,
it renegotiates an IP address (I'm on a regular phone line) and
continues on... almost like ppp never really died?
