I am not sure what the dependency problem is - but the answer to your
second question is, yes. You can use linux, and diald as a
gateway/firewall for you home network.
There is a document somewhere on the web that details all the steps in
setting up a home server (ppp, firewall and dns). I will try and find the url
this evening.
the basic steps are (and there are hoto's on most of these:
setup ethernet interface (lan)
setup ppp interface/modem
setup routing on firewall
setup ipfwadm (not sure if this is just a RH thing tho!)
(you may have to recompile kernel)
setup win95 machines to use the linux machine as the gateway
setup name servers on linux and win95
test ppp link from linux
test to see if you can access internet from win95 with link up - if you
cant ping a numeric address then your routing isnt setup or ipfwadm isnt
working.
once it all works install diald and test again
sorry this is so vague - I have only done this once myself using RH 5.1.
The HOWTO's explain almost everything, I couldnt have done it without
them!

I'm very, very new to Linux and the Unix world. Here is what I'm trying to
do:
Home network consisting of 4 Windows 95/98 machines and 1 Linux
box.
I want to have the Linux box be the gateway/router to the Internet for the
Windows machines.
I have been able to install Linux and have it dial up my ISP and connect
fine. What I can't get done is have the Windows machines use this
connection to access the web.
I've tried installing the diald package, but when I run RPM is fails with
dependency checks on ld-linux.so.2 and libc.so.6
Questions:
1. Is diald supported under OpenLinux 1.2 from Caldera?
2. Is what I'm attempting to do possible with just Linux and diald or do I
need other packages to make it work.
Please help. Thanks.
