Oops..I stated my case backwards! You're right about that, of course. But
the end result is the same for me...no communication!

That's the way diald set it up when I first installed it, using the sample
config scripts &etc as a starting point. As you know, the sl0 i/f is a
dummy SLIP interface that is used to monitor for network traffic. It is
(usually) removed from the routing table, placing ppp0 as the default
route. At any rate, THIS is the problem I am having with the new ISP
setup. The inet address does not get set during pppd's negotiation with
the server! But it did in the setup for the old ISP. the only difference,
other than some chat script expect string changes, is that the new ISP uses
NT and the old, Unix.

I am using multiple IP addesses on one interface, with IP aliasing. I just
edited out eth0:0 and eth0:1 to save space in the posting. With 255 class
C networks available for private use, that isa luxury that is
affordable...unlike "real" Internet IP addresses, which seem to be in short
supply, at least until ipv6 is widely deployed.
I think that dip does something with pppd that diald doesn't, possibly
having to do with reading the /etc/ppp/options file. Any ideas, anyone?
Where should I look next?
BTW, the machine that has been running diald for over 9 months now is a
486DX-4/100 and is used exclusively for connecting to the internet. As
soon as I can make it connect to the new (UGH!!!) NT ISP automatically (ie,
with diald, not dip), I will copy the diald setup to a customer's machine,
which will, in addition to being a masquerading dialup Internet gateway, be
their main file server. It is a PII-333. My diald machine is running
RH5.0, with the kernel upgraded to 2.0.33. The customer's PII has RH5.1
with kernel 2.0.35.

That came straight from the documentation (how-to) for IP Masquerading. If
there is a better way to set it up, I will gladly change it--I am still
learning, as I plan to do for at least the next 297 years, I hope! :-)
Hope this is enough info now for someone to maybe see what I am doing
wrong. If not, ask, and I a will post more.
Thanks for the help,
Marv
