Either move the options specifying pap/chap to /etc/ppp/options
(careful not to move certain options to this file ... see the
diald man page ... also, don't do this if you call out to several
different sites, some of which require authentication and some of
which do not) or put a line into your diald.options file something
like this:

        pppd-options auth <whatever other options are required>
