You need to:
1) compile 2.2 kernel with support for ethertap device. Don't forget to do make
modules_install at the end
2) create character special device /dev/tap0 (I assume you'll only need one)
with major number 36, minor number 16
3) if you elected to support ethertap as a module:
i) add these lines to /etc/conf.modules (or /etc/modules.conf, depending on
your system):
alias tap0 ethertap
options tap0 -o tap0 unit=0
ii) run depmod -a to 'register' the modules
Then modprobel will be able to load the ethertap driver and diald will be able
to see this proxy device.
