Mike is right about running a local nameserver. But there are
also lots of other reasons that some random win95/win98/nt machine
might decide that it needs to talk to the outside world all night
long. Just last week I had to go around and rip some sort of real
networks icon off of the taskbars of a bunch of pc's in our office.
They were connecting to servers at real.com every 3 hours or so.
The only defence is to take the time to understand tcpdump or some
other tool. The time you invest in learning the tool will be refunded
many times over.
Everyone be carefull out there.
