slip was used in 2.0.x kernels to set up a kind of dummy interface/routing to
catch outgoing packets and trigger the dialup.

with 2.2.x kernels (rh60) slip is not used anymore if you set up ethertap; if
diald can't set up ethertap it falls back to slip.
