pppd has started but the connect script hasn't even completed.
The connect script should not start pppd, diald will do this
bit (assuming it is configured with "mode ppp").
(N.B. Yes, it might well have worked with older dialds with
such broken configs. But that was because older dialds were
broken in that killing a bad connect script didn't kill subprocesses
of the connect script. So pppd may have stayed running, the link
may have stayed up, you may even have had routes through it - but
diald sure as hell wasn't managing it...)
