When diald was initially installed and configured it worked the few times I
tested it. After I began to move beyond the stock install scripts it broke
and I can't find what I did to break it. My scripts to start and stop PPP
work and continue to work. Diald will dial out, connect, and start pppd,
however the protocol never shows up under IFCONFIG and pppd quits after
about 10 seconds. The log message is

Jul 28 21:57:00 Linux4 diald[681]: Running pppd (pid = 749).
Jul 28 21:57:32 Linux4 diald[681]: child process 749 terminated with signal
1

Often I get a log message from [kernel] stating that the "kernel registered
device ppp0".

When I start pppd by hand (through some simple scripts) I get a series of
log messages including CONNECT ppp0 <==> /dev/modem. I never get messages
from [kernel], including the "kernel registered..." message.

I am not using pap or chap (yet).

I am using using RedHat 5.1 and diald 0.16. I have tried removing then
reinstalling the diald and pppd RPMs with no success. Although xWindows is
installed on the machine I am not using it. I ultimately want to use
pppd/diald on a machine without xWindows, so I need to learn how to set up
diald and pppd through the consoles alone. I would also prefer not to
upgrade diald to fix the problem unless there is no other way out. Diald
worked previously as-is and not upgrading would allow me to stay with one
consistent set of CDROMs for the whole system.

Any direction regarding what I may have broken would be much appreciated.
I have spend several hours looking through the pppd and diald config files
and believe that they are ok.
