thanks for your suggestion, but I also use the /dev/ttyS0 directly instead of
the /dev/modem link.

...snip(diald.conf)...
        pppd-options user "...my user name at the ISP(German T-Online)..."
        connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/ppp/ppp.chat.to"
        device /dev/ttyS0
        speed 115200
...snip(diald.conf)...

It looks like you've got the wrong com(ttySx) port set in your diald.conf.
I find it much easier to use the port in there rather than /dev/modem
because I don't have to worry about re-linking /dev/modem to the respective
port.
