PPP handles authentication, unless your ISP does not support automatic
ppp connections and requires a manual login (usually followed by a
command to start ppp on the other side), in which case  you'll have to edit your
connection script to expect the login and password prompts and respond
accordingly.  What happened when you did the minicom thing?
