IMHO If it ain't broke don't fix it. :)
In theory the ethertap device should be faster than using a slip link.

There was a time when diald with slip was unreliable on the Linux 2.1.x
kernels so I made the switch to ethertap (did exactly what I explained in
the previous email) and haven't looked back since then.
