Just an update for folks that are interested. It turns out that my
modification of the connect script was the issue. I used a modified
connect script from another system I setup and this works as advertised.
I do appreciate the help from all who responded. The "-v" option did
indeed provide more info, but still not enough to determine where my
screwup occurred. I'm going to compare the working and non-working
scripts to see what my failure was.
Kudo's to Lazuras Long for making a step by step proceedure for setting up
/dev/tap on a RedHat 6.0 system. Saved much time with this.
One more question if I may. Now with diald working, I do like to monitor
it's status with dctrl. But dctrl is not connecting to the fifo, named
/etc/diald/diald.ctl I believe, and thus giving no status. Reading the
man page, I get the idea that I can specify diald to start with a fifo
option. Is this the defualt behaviour of diald? If not, how would one
make the change, remembering diald on rh6.0 uses the
/etc/rc.d/init.d/diald script to control its startup. I've not have much
luck in the past changing these files successfully. Recommendations.
