Your .config fiel needs the following lien:
CONFIG_ETHERTAP=m
If you saved your old .config file when you upgraded (I always do)
then you should run
make oldconfig
That will fill out your old .config file with any new entries that
have been created since your previous kernel. This will put in the
missing ethertap option for you to use the next time you do
"make config" (or "make menuconfig", etc.).
